Suzette told the Board she had grown up in a military family and had retired from the military. Suzette moved to S un City after serving at Ft. Hood. After retiring from the Army, she went to Library School at the University of Texas at Austin. After graduating from UT, she was hired as the Reference Librarian. She is the author of the Library's Baffle the Bookworm column in the Williamson County Sun and assists patrons with reference and genealogy questions. Due to the large numbers of questions we receive concerning local cemeteries, Suzette recently attended a cemetery preservation workshop in Kerrville. ® Introduction of a board member - Betty Sensabaugh: Betty asked Shana N ichols to introduce herself to the Board. Shana moved to Georgetown in 1998. S hana grew up in a military family. She considers DeKalb, TX her hometown. After graduating high school, Shana attended and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in Economics. After graduating from UT, she worked for the City of Austin and now works for CSC Consultants in Austin. She is married with no children, but has four godchildren. • Summer meeting schedule — Betty Sensabaugh: Betty announced that Eric would be absent from the June meeting. She asked if the Board should meet in June. Shana Nichols made the motion to cancel the June 2009 meeting and David Ciambrone seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. • Parking — Eric Lashley: Eric announced that the Friends of the Library were going to petition the Georgetown City Council and the County Commissioner's Court to increase parking for the library, specifically at the corner of 8th and Martin Luther King Jr. The Friends of the Library are requesting meetings with Councilmembers and would be happy if members of the Advisory Board attended these meetings. Eric said he would notify members concerning any future meetings between the Friends and members of Council. • Georgetown Learns — David Ciambrone: David announced that he has met with Larry Franks and other members of the Georgetown Library Foundation to discuss having the Foundation sponsor the Georgetown Learns program. The Library Foundation meets on May 19, 2009 and will vote on whether to accept the proposal. All indications are that they will vote in favor of sponsoring the project. • CTLS news — Linda Nix: Linda read a section of the CTLS May Newsletter that concerned a presentation given by Pat Tuohy, Executive Director of CTLS, in regards to future of libraries. She was very encouraged to find that the Georgetown Public Library had followed a number of things that were outlined in the article and she felt we were ahead of many trends. • Meeting Room Use — Eric Lashley: Eric explained that the library's meeting room policies required catering for events to be approved by the Red poppy Coffee Company. Eric explained that he had a few complaints recently concerning the Red Poppy Coffee Company's catering services and that he had met with Lisa Hoekstra, owner, and had reiterated that the catering rights can be terminated if the library felt the complaints were negatively affecting patrons' attitudes toward the library. • Swine flu and library closure — Eric Lashley: Eric explained that the City will follow the Center for Disease Control's recommendations and the Georgetown Independent School District in regards to closing public facilities. If the schools are closed due to a public health concern, the City will close the Library as well as the Recreation Center to prevent the spread of disease. Chairperson Betty Sensabaugh adjourned the meeting at 7:45 PM. Respectfully submitted, Anjeanette Courtin, Secretary vi Betty Sensabaugh, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY February 2009 HIGHLIGHTS • Richard Groves was promoted to Public Services Librarian in late January. In this position he is directly responsible to the library director and he will supervise the eleven -person public services staff. • Premium Blend, a guitar and cello duo, performed in the Music! Live @ the Library series on Sunday, February 15. A considerable crowd sat down to listen to the entire performance. • Austin author Elizabeth Crook, whose most recent book, The Night Journal, won the Spur Award for a long novel, spoke to a crowd of more than 100 on February 26. These fund-raising events sponsored by the Friends are increasingly popular. • On Friday, February 27, staff shifted the adult collections that are shelved on the first floor to make more room for new fiction books. STAFF Eric Lashley, Rosa Garcia, and Kathleen Burnop traveled to Salado on February 19 to attend a CTLS membership meeting and workshop about the children's summer reading program. Bethni King went to Llano on February 26 to attend the CTLS workshop about the summer program for teens. VOLUNTEERS • Volunteers Suzanne Stallings, Carol Parsonage, and Ben Trollinger finished the oral history interviews during February. Suzanne and Carol each did a total of three interviews and Ben did two. February Patron Comments Comment: Please do not open another line of people — without asking to help the next person in line. This happened to me while others behind me were helped. Comment: From a patron's view, the "new" shelves don't seem very accessible. And from a shelver's point of view, it really stinks. Books are too far apart and too difficult to find. Comment: Your volunteers help much. Comment: Remove plants that overflow the benches outside the library— always overgrown and can't sit on benches. Comment: As a frequent patron of Georgetown Library — I have a suggestion. Could it be possible to pay for e.g. $20 annual membership that allows a member better rate for library facilities like printing costs, faxes, etc. Comment: Please put a date stamp at self checkout. Comment: Ask your Friends of the Libraryto be more quiet when the situ stairs. q Y p GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY Comparative Fiscal Year Statistics 008 2009 Oct Nov Dec Jan Feb Mar Annual Total Patron Visits Current Year 29997 22046 25586 27240 27116 131985 2007-008 18694 24295 26951 25342 304799 2006-2007 22271 19035 14916 N/A** NIA** N/A'* 202304 2005-2006 23232 17724 17784 21945 21506 213 265219 Circulation 2008 2009 Current Year 38909 33986 33923 37724 37916 182458 007-2008 31074 31938 30642 3279 34536 35492 4194 2006-007 28923 2537 24141 17259 32507 36302 386948 2005-2006 28242 26160 22436 28259 27898 31229 348114 FY 2008-2009 Statistics Children's Programs Annual Total Attendance 1698 939 1104 820 730 591 Programs 4 - -2 7 0 4 17 Story Time 21 19 13 24 20 97 Other (Tour, Movies, 1 3 0 1 2 7 After School Progran 0 0 0 0 0 0 Other Services ILL Ordered 32 27 23 33 43 158 ILL filled 25 20 16_ 17 35 113 Lg Print Circuit- 200 200 200 200 200 1000 Internet usage (persons) 7906 6565 7089 9738 - 8483 3 781 Volunteer Hours Adult 688.25 584.25 634;50 687,00 602,50 3196ZO Teen 34.00 4.00 25.00 26,00 21;50- 110.50 Community Service 118.00 17125 153.00 354,25 160,50 959.00 Total 840.25 761.50 812.50 1067.25 784,50 0100 4266.00 Registrations City Residents -new 111 51 204 179 188 733 GISD Kids' Cards 8 13 8 9 63 101 Non -residents -new 26 23 39 41 31 160 Total 145 87 251 229 282 0 994 Cash Receipts Fines/Misc. The Red Poppy Coffee Company catered the luncheon and author Julie Kenner spoke to the group. Special recognition awards were given to Mary Beth Huba, for twenty-five years of summertime storytelling; to Judy Johnston for her long and varied service to the library as a volunteer, volunteer coordinator, library board member, and CTLS lay rep; and to Leo Hamilton who for many years has done original cataloging for the library. He is the only volunteer who provides professional services. Leo was ill the day of the luncheon and did not receive his award until April 30. The Sun City Dulcimer Club, accompanied by a number of other instruments, performed in the Music! Live @ the Library series on Sunday, April 19. Staff received many positive comments about the performance. An additional step browser has been added to hold the overflowing music CD collection. The Friends of the Library paid for $1600 of the $2000 cost of the browser. To make more room for items that circulate all the time, the holiday music collection was removed and will be displayed in a separate rotating wire display unit. The nonfiction collection has been shifted to make more room on the shelves and to eliminate using the bottom shelves. STAFF • Eric Lashley, who is now an officer in the Texas Library Association, traveled to Houston to attend a business meeting on Friday, April 3, the last day of TLA's annual conference. Other staff had planned to attend the annual conference, but the City's freeze on overnight travel forced them to cancel their plans. • On April 8 Eric spoke to the Lions Club about library services. • On April 14 Eric and Rosa Garcia attended the meeting of the Sun City Kiwanis Club and received a check for $500 for children's programming. • On April 29 Suzette Davidson, reference librarian, attended a cemetery preservation workshop in Kerrville. VOLUNTEERS The library has been the beneficiary of the generosity of people who are grateful for the work Jerry Sensabaugh does, helping people prepare their tax returns. A number of people have donated money to the library in honor of Jerry's work. April Patron Comments Comment: You are out of sanitizer outside the upstairs women's bathroom.
