HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_ARTAB_02.15.2006mutes of the meeting of the Arts and Culture Board of Georgetown, Texas February 15, 2006 Members present Paul Gaffney, Rich Bartko, Addie Busfield, Jane Paden, Ruth Roberts Excused absent: Natalie Dowling, Penny Plueckhahn, Jane Voltz, Charles Aguillon Chair Paul Gaffney called the meeting to order at 2:05 p.m. 1. Ruth Roberts moved and Rich Bartko seconded a motion to accept the minutes of the January meeting as distributed. Motion passed unanimously. 2. Chair Gaffney said that it is possible that some board members may not want to meet on March 15 since it is in the middle of spring break week for GISD and. SU. He will poll the members to see whether another Wednesday in March will be better for all. Jane Paden announcedthat she will be out of town from March 4 — 25 and is unlikely to be available for any meeting in March. a. Judy Fabry presented the proposed design for the certificate of excellence which all members present approved with minor changes. Judy will print the first certificate, for Southwestern University's production of "The Glass Menagerie," on vellum or parchment paper, and notify Paul Gaffney when it is available for hint to sign. b. Ruth Roberts moved and Jane Paden seconded a motion to give the second certificate of excellence to the Georgetown Heritage Society for their holiday homes tours. The motion passed unanimously. 3. Rich Bartko reported on his conversation with a representative of Lamar Advertising about the availability of roadside billboard space for cities. He learned that Lamar will donate the space but that the city or non-profit organization must pay for print production and installation of the advertisement. For a 14 x 48 foot billboard, that would amount to about $2300. Rich thought an advertisement might be in place for as long as a year, but if Lamar found a better -paying customer for the same space before the year was up, an ad that the city had bought would be moved to another location. 4. Jane Voltz had notified Judy Fabry that she would report on her meeting with Randy Morrow at the March meeting. 5. Paul Gaffney reported that he had learned from Tom Yantis and Kent Huntsman that the gateway signage project is already complete. 6. Rich Bartko reported he had looked at the materials Charles Aguillon had provided by e-mail and had gone to the Texas Commission on the Arts website for more information (www.arts.state.tx.us). He recommended all board members look at the website for more information. There are grants from TCA for which the Arts and Culture Board would be eligible. Ruth Roberts said she had talked informally with Leo Woods about involving him in writing grant proposals for the Arts and Culture Board. 7. Paul Gaffney had to cancel the meeting he had scheduled with Vincent Kitzch, Art in Public Places Administrator for the City of Austin. He will speak with him again after the date of the March board meeting is established and invite him to do a presentation at the March meeting about how Austin's 2% for Art ordinance works. 8. Items for the March agenda: a. Nominations for certificates of excellence — Addie Busfield b. Ask City Council for $200,000 appropriation in 2006-07 budget for public art for the new library — Paul Gaffney c. Schedule a workshop with City Council for April 24 — Eric Lashley d. Report on the mural wall at 7th and Main — Shelley Hargrove 9. Ruth Roberts moved and Jane Paden seconded a motion to adjourn. Motion passed unanimously.
