Ladies,
I apologize for not having this information to you earlier, A crashed e-mail server and the wild fire situations in the
area have put me a week behind. The e-mails I had sent earlier bounced back along with many others, when we got our
server back on line. The text was not recoverable, so I will try again, I am sure I will not be as eloquent as in the first
attempt. Thank you for you patience.
I have attached a short bio on our Post, just to give you an idea who we are and what we are about. Listed below is our
reason for celebration.
June 30, 2001 at the VFW State Convention, in Houston, M/Sgt Ben D. Snowden Post 8587 in Georgetown, Texas
was recognized as the #1 Post in the State. (There are 424 Posts in Texas) This position of honor was achieved by our
members in recognition of their of continuation of Service to our Country. This is thru service to area veterans in
need, homeless and disabled veterans, active duty service members and their families, and service to Georgetown and
Williamson County. In addition, VFW District 28 was recognized as the # 1 district in Texas. (There are 30 Districts
in Texas)
Post 8587 Past Commander Janis Arteaga was named VFW Post Commander of the Year of 2011. She was also
awarded the "Danny Henry Award" as Outstanding Commander,
Post 8587 Quartermaster Paul Adams was named as Quartermaster of the Year of 2011. He also was awarded a
"Boots on the Ground" award for recruiting efforts.
District 28 Commander Larry Konarik ( A resident of Georgetown and a member of Post 8587) was named #1
District Commander of Texas for the year 2011. He also was awarded the distiquished "Rutherford Award" as one
of the top VFW Leaders in Texas.
John Spahr A Georgetown resident and a Past Commander of Post 8587 was elected as Department of Texas State
Commander for 201 1-1012.
August 29,2011 at the VFW National Convention in San Antonio,( Last time the Nation Convention was held in
Texas was 1995) M/Sgt Ben D. Snowden Post 8587 in Georgetown, Texas was recognized as the #1 Post in the
Nation in Division 3. (There are 9000 Posts in the Nation).
Since there are Posts in the US, Europe, Asia and the Pacific, Quartermaster Paul Adams believes Georgetown should
be declared as the # 1 Post on the Planet. (That Georgetown and Texas pride is hard to beat).
At the Council meeting the Post would like to present the City with a POW/MIA Flag. September 16 is POW/MIA
day. With all the ceremonies for Patriots Day on 9/1 I, we want to continue to remember those who never came home.
Since World War I thru today there are 92,000 troops listed as POW/MIA . The VFW leads the fight to have these
people accounted for, each year approximately 100 remains are identified and returned to their families. Much is left to
be done, many more are still out there, they are our loved ones, and their families deserve to have answers. " We love
them and we want them back. The POW/MIA slogan is "No One Left Behind" and we support that completely.
We ask the City of Georgetown to fly this flag daily as a rememberince of this servicemen and women and their
families.
We had originally asked if the Mayor might issue a proclamation, 1 realize there is not enough time to have this by the
Council Meeting. We think a proclamation for the celebration of our Post Accomplishments, might be more
appropriate. We will have the date for that celebration in the next week and I will get it to you. At this time we are
looking at a date October, this is to meet the schedule of several guests and dignitaries that wish to attend and speak.

VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS
The VFW traces its roots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the
Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their
service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension fof
them, and they were left to care for themselves.
In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would
become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. Since then, the VFW's voice had
been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI bill for the 20th century, the
development of the National Cemetery System and the fight for compensation for Vietnam vets
exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome,
In 2008, VFW won a long -fought victory with the passing of a GI Bill for the 21 st Century, giving
expanded educational benefits to America's active -duty service members, and members of the Guard
and Reserves, fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The VFW also has fought for improving VA medical centers services for women veterans. Annually,
VFW members and its Auxiliary contribute more than 13 million hours of volunteerism in the
community. From providing $2.5 million in college scholarships to high school students every year to
encouraging elevation of the Veterans Administration to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there --
honoring the dead by helping the living.
POST 8587 GEORGETOWN
Concerned with veterans issues and needs, a group of Georgetown Veterans began meeting in 1966,
they chartered Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8587 in August of 1967.
The membership chose to name the post for " Master Sargent Ben, D. Snowden". Ben Snowden grew
up in Georgetown, went to school here, his family lived here, he joined the military here and most of the
members knew him. He excelled in the military as he had growing up, he became a Green Beret, a
team leader. He was killed, in Viet Nam, on a volunteer mission, to rescue team members, who were
being overrun by the communist . M/-Sgt Snowden was only 30 years old, a family man and it was felt
he epitomized the ideals of service and sacrifice.
These first members constructed our current post building in 1968, with funds and building materials
donated by our membership and local citizens. An addition was built on in 1976.
We currently have over 950 Post Members made up of Veterans, Active Duty, Reservist's and Retiree's
from all Branches of the US Military.

Our Post Members average over 400 recorded volunteer hours and hundreds of unrecorded hours per
month of service to our Community in the forms of the following:
Veteran Assistance
• Consistent Financial Support to VA Hospital in Temple
• Veterans Emergency Assistance
• Homeless Veterans Fund and Projects
• Regular support and visitation to area Nursing Homes
• Weekly visits to Ft Hood welcoming home and seeing off Veterans deploying
• Visitation and Arranged Visits to the Post with Disable Veterans at Temple Hospital
• Visitation to Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio
• Veterans VA Application and information assistance
Assistance to Families of Active Duty Personnel
• Project Unmet Needs -providing emergency financial assistance to families of
deployed troops
• Project Uplink -providing communication between Families and deployed Service
Members
• Regular "care packages" sent out to deployed US Troops
Community Programs and Assistance
• Meals on Wheels, as volunteers and with monetary donations.
• Caring Place and Goodwill, volunteers and donations.
• Georgetown Care Givers.
• Williamson County History Museum.
• Volunteers in many support organizations.
Youth Projects
• Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps- JROTC
• Scouting -yearly recognition of Scouts promoted to Eagle Scout
• Youth Sports -sponsorship of various sporting teams yearly
• Sea Cadets -our Post has adopted a unit made up of 43 young men and
Women.
• 4-H Clubs -regular donations for travel and various funds needed
• Toys for Tots/Brown Santa -yearly collection and delivery in time for
Christmas
• School Involvement to promote good Citizenship, Patriotism, Flag facts and
the history behind national patriotic holidays such as Loyalty Day, Independence Day,
and Memorial Day
• Regular monetary donations to Boy and Girls Clubs in the local area
• Regular monetary donations to Georgetown Project Youth which promotes
Youth Activities Programs

I am writing to confirm date and time for the DAR Constitution Week Proclamation at the September 13, 2011,
City Council meeting. Mary Richmond, regent of the Sun City Robert Gilbert Livingston Chapter of the NSDAR,
will be attending and will receive the proclamation. We appreciate your arranging this for us.
The following may be of use to you for the proclamation:
• The weeklong commemoration of America's most important document is one of our country's
least known official observances. Our Constitution stands as a testament to the tenacity of
Americans throughout history to maintain their liberties and freedom, and to ensure those
unalienable rights to every American.
• The tradition of celebrating the Constitution was started many years ago by the Daughters of
the American Revolution (DAR). In 1955, the Daughters petitioned Congress to set aside
September 17-23 annually to be dedicated for the observance of Constitution Week. The
resolution was later adopted by the U.S. Congress and signed into Public Law #915 on
August 2, 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The aims of the celebration are to (1)
emphasize citizens' responsibilities for protecting and defending the Constitution, preserving
it for posterity; (2) inform the people that the Constitution is the basis for America's great
heritage and the foundation for our way of life; and (3) encourage the study of the historical
events which led to the framing of the Constitution in September 1787.
• The United States of America functions as a Republic; under the Constitution, which is the
oldest document still in active use that outlines the self-government of a people. This
landmark idea that men had the inalienable right as individuals to be free and live their lives
under their own governance was the impetus of the American Revolution. Today, the
Constitution stands as an icon of freedom for people around the world.
• Constitution Week is the perfect opportunity to read and study this great document which is the safeguard
of our American liberties. This week the Robert Gilbert Livingston Chapter NSDAR will have displays at the
Georgetown Public Library and at Jo Ann Ford Elementary School. We encourage all citizens across the
country to take time this week to reflect on our heritage of freedom."
